The Formula 1 Las Vegas Grand Prix was already unprecedented in several aspects, such as the race taking place on a Saturday night, and now there’s another one. The cancellation of the first free practice session required extending the second session, which was also delayed for logistical reasons.
With a duration of 90 minutes, it started at 2:30 am local time (10:30 am in mainland Portugal). Yes, you read that right. And this means that FP2 will continue until 4:00 am, which is the first time a session is held in the early hours of the morning. Especially in an urban center like Las Vegas.
Furthermore, due to logistics, fans were asked to leave, making it a closed-door practice session. The origin of all this is a sewer cover that came loose during FP1 when the cemented enclosure around it gave way. It was necessary to intervene and check all the sewer covers around the track, which led to the postponement of FP2.
