David Alonso threatens to once again be the main protagonist at the Moto3 Italian GP. This morning, the championship leader topped the free practice session in Mugello with a new lap record and over a one-second lead.
After most riders had completed their initial flying laps, José Antonio Rueda (Red Bull KTM Ajo) was leading. Alonso (CFMoto Valresa Aspar), who had been the first to set a time, surpassed the Spaniard, but Rueda responded to reclaim the top spot.
However, with just over eight minutes elapsed, Alonso took the lead definitively. The Colombian put in a series of fast laps, continually improving the reference time. It was only on his final lap that he set the time that stood: 1m55.818s.
This is a new lap record at Mugello, leaving Alonso isolated at the top of the session. Ryusei Yamanaka (MT Helmets-MSi/KTM) was second, 1.068s behind, while Rueda finished third, 1.232s back. Daniel Holgado (Red Bull GasGas Tech3) and Stefano Nepa (LevelUp-MTA/KTM) rounded out the top five.
