Sprint races made their way into MotoGP in 2023, awarding half the points of the main races and being held at every round – except for the Australian GP, which couldn’t happen due to weather conditions.
Consequently, the final championship standings would have been different without the Sprint races. Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati) would still be the champion but with 327 points (he scored 467). Interestingly, the gap to the runner-up, Jorge Martín (Prima Pramac/Ducati), would have been larger: 67 points. Martín dominated the Sprint races, winning nine and being the only one consistently scoring on Saturdays.
Marco Bezzecchi (Mooney VR46 Racing Team/Ducati) would remain the third-place finisher. The only change in the top five would be Johann Zarco (Prima Pramac/Ducati) in fourth and Brad Binder (Red Bull KTM) in fifth – a reversal from their positions in the actual championship.
A total of 29 riders scored points in the main races – including wildcard and substitute riders. With just three points, Cal Crutchlow (Yamalube RS4GP) would close this classification. Among regular riders, substitutes, and wildcards, only three didn’t score: Álvaro Bautista (Aruba.it Ducati), Iker Lecuona (LCR Honda and Repsol Honda Team), and Takumi Takahashi (LCR Honda).
