In a shocking turn of events just days before the Super Bowl LVIII, Patrick Mahomes Sr., father of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, has been arrested on suspicion of DWI (Driving While Intoxicated) in Tyler, Texas. The 53-year-old former MLB pitcher was booked into Smith County Jail on Saturday, according to jail records, facing his third or more charge of DWI. His bond has been set at $10,000.
DWI, known as Driving While Intoxicated, is a serious traffic offense involving operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs. In the United States, the term DWI is used in some states, while others refer to it as DUI (Driving Under the Influence).
Mahomes Sr.’s previous run-ins with the law include a DWI offense in 2018, for which he pleaded guilty and served 40 days in county jail, as reported by Bleacher Report. Additionally, he faced charges following a single-car accident in 1994 and was arrested and charged with public intoxication at a game between Texas Christian University (TCU) and Texas Tech, his son’s alma mater, in 2016.
The arrest comes at a critical time, just ahead of his son’s Super Bowl LVIII face-off against the San Francisco 49ers.
Patrick Mahomes Sr. had a notable MLB career from 1992 to 2003, playing for teams including the Boston Red Sox, New York Mets, Texas Rangers, Chicago Cubs, and the Pittsburgh Pirates. He is also inducted into the Sioux Falls Canaries Hall of Fame and currently hosts The Big Mahomes Show, a weekly podcast that offers an insider’s look at professional sports.
Mahomes Sr. shares sons Mahomes Jr. and Jackson Mahomes with ex-wife Randi Martin, and he is also the father to Zoe Mahomes from a subsequent relationship. The divorced couple are grandparents to Mahomes Jr.’s two children with his wife Brittany Mahomes: daughter Sterling Skye Mahomes and son Patrick “Bronze” Lavon Mahomes III.
