The sprint race in Miami saw Max Verstappen, the reigning three-time F1 champion, emerge as the winner. Verstappen has remained undefeated at the Miami circuit since his debut in 2022. Meanwhile, Sargeant, who races for Williams, finished in 12th place, two positions ahead of his teammate Alex Albon.
However, during the qualifying session for the Sunday race, Sargeant struggled and ended up in 17th place out of the 20 drivers. In a radio communication with his Williams team, Sargeant anxiously asked if he had made it to the next qualifying round. Unfortunately, he was informed that he had not, leading him to express his disappointment.
Williams team principal James Vowles made it clear that Sargeant needs to improve his performance to consistently match Albon if he wants to keep his seat. There is speculation that Sargeant could be replaced as soon as the race in Imola, Italy, on May 19. The favorite to take his place is Mercedes junior driver Andrea Kimi Antonelli, a 17-year-old Italian who competes in Formula 2 but does not have the required Super License for F1 races.
Reports suggest that a request has been made to the FIA to grant Antonelli a Super License before his 18th birthday in August. Vowles acknowledged the desire to bring in new drivers but stressed that the team’s focus should be on addressing bigger issues and improving the car’s performance. He also highlighted that Antonelli’s transition from Formula 4 to Formula 1 would be a significant leap in a short period.
Despite Williams being a customer of Mercedes, Vowles stated that they do not have enough data to assess Antonelli’s performance and confirmed that he will not be driving Sargeant’s car in Imola. The lack of comparable references, as well as the use of older cars in testing, makes a fair comparison difficult.
In general, the team’s main concern is to improve the car’s performance rather than making decisions about the drivers for the upcoming seasons.
The Williams boss also mentioned that his most recent conversation with Antonelli took place during the last race of the 2023 season in Abu Dhabi. However, he firmly stated that Antonelli will not replace Sargeant in the near future: “There was a rumor circulating that he would be in the car from Imola – but he will not be in the car at Imola.
“From the beginning, I have always emphasized that it is a merit-based system. Logan must earn his place. Currently, he has some challenging goals to achieve to get closer to Alex. But there are no plans at the moment to replace him,” Vowles insisted.
This season, Sargeant missed a race due to Albon’s accident during practice in Australia. Since Williams did not have a spare car, Sargeant’s car was given to Albon for the race. In the following event, in Japan, Sargeant received the repaired car from Albon instead of his own intact Williams.
Throughout four of the five races this season, Sargeant has consistently been outperformed by Albon in the standings, and his best finishing position was 14th place. He only scored one point in his debut season, which was last year in Austin, after participating in 26 races.
Sargeant, who took a day off earlier this week to go boating with his family and friends, expressed that he feels relaxed when racing at home and is not affected by external speculations: “Every Formula 1 race carries a significant amount of pressure.
“If anything, it seems like a more relaxed weekend, being able to stay at home and enjoy the freedom of eating whatever I want. I have my friends and my parents with me. It seems a bit different from the norm, but in a positive way,” explained the American. (Report by Jenna Fryer; Additional quotes F1TV)
