Yamaha has unveiled a new version of the Nmax 155 scooter in Indonesia – the Nmax 155 Turbo. The name immediately grabs attention, but contrary to expectations, it doesn’t feature an actual turbocharger and isn’t likely destined for the European market.
The term «turbo» typically refers to a turbocharger, a component found in some internal combustion engines that boosts power output. However, in this scooter’s case, Yamaha is using the term for marketing purposes. The real innovation lies in the introduction of Yamaha’s E-CVT transmission.
Traditional scooter transmissions typically use a centrifugal clutch and a weight-controlled Variomatic system, providing continuous variable transmission. Yamaha’s E-CVT complements this setup with an electric motor designed to control a set of front conical discs, enabling the Nmax 155 Turbo to generate fixed gear ratios. Gear changes are selected via controls on the handlebar.
But there are more news. The entire fairing has been redesigned, featuring a new front headlight design that gives it a more aggressive appearance. The engine remains largely unchanged: a single-cylinder with a displacement of 155 cc producing 15.1 hp.
Riders will find a new TFT display with connectivity features on the instrument panel. The new functionalities of the E-CTV, along the two driving modes (City and Sport) are controlled by a button on the left side.
According to MotorradOnline.de, quoting Yamaha in Germany, the new Nmax 155 Turbo is exclusively intended for the Indonesian market, with no plans to introduce even the new transmission system to Europe for now.
